Journalists in State of Emergency – 15

Ten more journalists detained on 41st day of Turkey’s State of Emergency rule

P24

31.08.2016

On August 30, detention warrants were issued for 35 journalists as part of the probe launched into the July 15 coup d’état attempt, officially called the “Fethhullah Gülenist Terrorist Organization/Parallel State Structure (FETÖ/PDY)” investigation. Nine of the 35 individuals  on the most recent list were detained in raids that started at dawn.

The nine journalists detained on charges of “involvement in FETÖ’s media arm” on Aug. 30 were: former Yeni Şafak General Coordinator and Zaman writer Nurullah Öztürk, Samanyoluhaber news site columnist Rasih Yılmaz, Özgür Düşünce columnist Murat Aksoy, Abdullah Alparslan Akkuş, Hürriyet Internet editor Dinçer Gökçe, Bugün daily reporter İskender Yunus Tiryaki, Levent Arap, former Ankara Bureau Chief for Radikal and Meydan newspapers, and Ayhan Şimşek.

Meydan columnist Atilla Taş, who also happens to be a famous singer, was detained in the early hours of Aug. 31 in the nearby town of Gemlik after he declared in his Twitter feed his plans to arrive in Istanbul and turn himself in to the police in the morning.

As part of the investigation, homes of Yavuz Baydar, a P24 founder who has served as president of the World Organization of News Ombudsman and writer Ali Yurttagül, who has worked as a political advisor for  the European Union's Greens-European Free Alliance Group were raided. Both journalists weren’t in their homes during the raids, and police reportedly broke in and searched the two journalists’ residences; leaving a copy of the formal search log at the premises.

In a related development, pro-government sources have announced on Twitter that Yener Dönmez, owner of the news site Habervaktim, who had been detained earlier in the post-coup investigation, was put under arrest on Aug. 30.

Coup probe in numbers

In the immediate aftermath of the July 15 coup attempt, several lists of wanted journalists were formally released. On July 25, a list including 42 journalists’ names, and on July 27 another list of 46 journalists, were released. Apart from these, there were reports that 14 journalists were detained in Antalya on July 26, and reports of 42 employees of the state-owned TRT network detained on Aug. 11. Full name lists weren’t shared in either of these cases. The arrests of the journalists in the coup investigation are hugely underreported, making it hard to keep track of the legal status of those known to have been detained at some point.

So far, detention warrants for at least 82 journalists have been issued in the coup investigation. Sixty-four of those have been arrested since the coup attempt. The total number of journalists under arrest in a Fethullah Gülen-related investigation is 66, including two journalists who were detained prior to the coup attempt. The total number of journalists under arrest in Turkey is 108 as of Aug. 30. This figure does not include at least 36 staff members of TRT (the state-run Turkish Radio and Television Company), who are also confirmed to be under arrest.

Detentions outside the coup probe

On Aug. 28, 23 employees of Azadiya Welat, Turkey’s only Kurdish-language daily, were detained during a police raid on the central office of the newspaper in Diyarbakır. Dicle News Agency (DİHA) reported that police search of the office lasted four hours, and female reporters of the newspaper were handcuffed while being taken into custody. Police also seized 62 banned books, several hard disks, laptops and computers during the raid.

Those who were taken into custody were Yasemin Sayın, Hayat Yılmaz, Ahmet Kızılay, Arap Turan, Berxwedan Tulpar, Sürreya Dal, Zeynep İzgi, İbrahim Bayram, Engin Özelçi, Ahmet Boltan, Ceylan İpek, Mehmet Emin Kaya, Ziyan Karahan, Veysi Altın, Ercan Yeltaş, Azime Tarhan, Serdal Polat, Cengiz Aslan, Ferit Toprak, Mehmet Hüseyin Şahin, Mehmet Aydın, Pusat Bulut  and  Mehmet Emin Akgün. An individual named Mecrum Tekol, who was visiting the office during the raid, and a minor identified as Aydın Kaya, were also taken into custody during the raid.

Two other detentions occurred on Aug. 30 outside the coup probe. DİHA editor Mehmet Ali Ertaş was detained by police in Diyarbakır after reading out a press statement in front of Azadiya Welat’s office. Another DİHA reporter, Metin Yoksu, was detained in Istanbul briefly, and was released after a few hours on the same day.

On Aug. 31, the Turkish Journalists Union (TGS) announced that the head of its Adana branch Salim Büyükkaya had been detained. The reason for his detention couldn’t immediately be confirmed.
