Objective investigative journalism grantees named

The international jury of the Objective Investigative Journalism Training Programme selects the six projects to be supported

An international jury named six projects to be supported under this year’s Objective Investigative Journalism Training Programme, which is run by the Istanbul-based Punto 24 Platform for Independent Journalism (P24) and funded by the London-based Guardian Foundation.
The five-member jury convened on January 31 to review applications submitted by 34 journalists aged under 35 in response to a call made by P24 in November. The jury selected six journalists to receive a grant to fund their investigative work, as well as training and one-on-one mentoring.
The Objective Turkey programme jury consisted of P24 President Hasan Cemal, the Guardian Foundation Executive Director Ben Hicks (Britain), writer Perihan Mağden, The Guardian Middle East correspondent Kareem Shaheen (Egypt) and The Economist Turkey correspondent Piotr Zalewski (Poland).
The journalists and project topics that the jury agreed to support are as follows:
- Desislava Şenay Martinova Öztürk, “Bonsai’s Journey in Turkey”
- Dicle Baştürk, “KanalIstanbul: An International Crisis in the Making”
- Merve Diltemiz Mol, “The LGBTI movement in State of Emergency”
- Uygar Gültekin, “Can the Assyrians Return to Their Homeland?”
- Bekir Avcı, “From Satellite Dishes to Wireless”
- Tamer Arda Erşin, “The Impact of Asbestos Release from Demolition of Buildings on the Environment and Public Health”
The grantees will now join a training program according to their selected topics of investigation and be paired with an experienced journalist who will provide one-on-one mentoring.
The grantees will be given a grant of TL 10,000 each, with half of the amount due to be paid at the beginning of work. The remaining amount will be received upon succesful completion of the training seminar, mentoring and the proposed work.
