Journalists in State of Emergency – 44
Two Doğan Media Group journalists fired for publicly announcing they will vote “No” in April referendum
12.02.2017
The Doğan Media Group sacked two journalists on Feb. 11 for publicly announcing that they will vote against proposed amendments to the Constitution that will go to popular vote on April 16.
The new constitution seeks to introduce an executive presidency, practically putting an end to the country’s parliamentary system.
The Doğan Group announced that it had terminated its contract with Kanal D anchor İrfan Değirmenci, who explained the reasons why he will vote against the changes to his followers on social media; and also with Hakan Çelenk, a columnist for the Doğan-owned Posta newspaper.
In a statement about Değirmenci’s dismissal, the Doğan Publications Group said the journalist had taken a “side” in an issue under ongoing public discussion. It said this violated the group’s “most fundamental principle of impartiality.”
A few hours after Değirmenci’s dismissal, media reports stated that Posta writer Çelenk had also been dismissed.
Çelenk had made comments in favor of voting against the constitutional amendments on Jan. 22 during a live television program aired on CNN Türk, a network owned by the Doğan Group.
Dismissals of academics
On Feb. 7, the Turkish Government issued a new Cabinet Decree removing 330 academics from their posts in state universities. The full list of the names of the academics expelled from universities can be viewed here.
Those dismissed include professors and lecturers at the Ankara University’s communications and journalism department Funda Başaran, Mine Gencel Bek, Nur Betül Çelik, Funda Başaran Özdemir, Funda Şenol Cantek and Ülkü Doğanay.
Many of the expulsions include academics who had signed a petition supporting a peaceful solution to Turkey’s decades-long Kurdish conflict last year in February.
One journalist, whose details could not be immediately established, was detained during protests at Ankara University on Feb. 9 following the dismissals. Footage showing a journalist being manhandled while being taken into custody was shared on social media.
Trials of journalists
Ayşenur Parıldak, a former journalist for Zaman — a Fethullah Gülen affiliated newspaper which was shut down after the coup attempt of July 15, 2016 — was on trial for the first time on Feb. 9 since her arrest in July last year.
Parıldak is accused of membership in the Fethullah Gülen group, officially called the “Fethullah Gülen Terror Organization” by Turkish authorities. The journalist, who faces up to 15 years in prison for her alleged membership in the group, protested her innocence during the trial, which was adjourned until a later date.
On Feb. 8, journalist Mehmet Baransu, who has been under arrest since March 2014 on various terror charges regarding his news stories published in the Taraf newspaper and the former responsible managing editor of Taraf — a position which assumes legal liability in libel cases — Murat Şevki Çoban, were on trial on charges of acquiring and publishing state secrets in relation with a news story that claimed the Fethullah Gülen network was blacklisted by the country’s top security body at a National Security Council (MGK) meeting in 2004. Baransu faces up to 50 years and 6 months and Çoban faces up to 31 years in prison. The trial was adjourned until April 19.
Two more TV networks shut down
The television networks Kanal On4 and Kanal 12, which broadcast to a Shi’ite minority group called the Caferi (Jafari), were shut down under a decree issued on Jan. 23. Islamist media have claimed that the two networks broadcasts had an editorial line supportive of Bashar Assad.
According to most observers, Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has favored a pro-Sunni policy in Syria.
