The T24 news site has published the full Turkish translation of the first issue of Charlie Hebdo following last week’s massacre in a 16-page gallery.
T24 announced its decision to publish this historic edition of Charlie Hebdo, saying “We must not allow journalism to be the profession of learned helplessness.” The full statement regarding the decision to publish the issue reads as follows:
“In the attack on the Charlie Hebdo magazine on Wednesday 7 January ten journalists and two security officers were killed.
Three million copies of the first issue of Charlie Hebdo following the terrorist attack were printed and distributed today today (14 January 2015).
T24 is presenting the full Turkish text of the 16-page magazine to the Turkish public. We are aware that there are people who will not approve of the content of the magazine, and who will judge it to be against their faith and beliefs. However, the profession of journalism and the right to information makes it our right and duty to publish the first issue of Charlie Hebdo following the attack on the magazine, an issue that has been keenly awaited throughout the world.
There can be no limit to freedom of expression and freedom of the press other than those of hate speech, defamation, insult and incitement to violence. However, we must be able to question the lack of tolerance that interprets different opinions as insults.
T24 is publishing the full Turkish text of the magazine in support of freedom of expression and in solidarity against terrorism.
We must not allow journalism in Turkey to be the profession of conditioned indifference and learned hopelessness.”
