Journalists in State of Emergency — 59
One editor was arrested, one kept in isolation and another was handed down a prison sentence in the first week of May
05.05.2017
On May 2, Ayşenur Parıldak, a Zaman journalist who has been imprisoned as part of the probe into the alleged group behind the July 15 coup attempt was rearrested without ever leaving prison following an overturned release decision.
The Ankara 14th High Criminal Court on May 2 ruled to release Parıldak issuing an international travel ban. Shortly after her release, a prosecutor objected to the decision, which was accepted by a court, effectively overturning the release ruling.
A similar episode earlier occurred in Istanbul, when 21 journalists on trial in Istanbul and six others in Antalya were released by court rulings but later either immediately rearrested after prosecutorial objections or detained and arrested in new investigations. Only three people, one in Istanbul and two in Antalya were released after the ordeal.
The judges on the panel of the Istanbul court which had issued the ruling were suspended after about a week of the trial.
Bursa journalist arrested
On May 4, Ozan Kaplanoğlu, an editor with the Bursa Muhalif, a local newspaper, was detained during an early morning raid on his home. Sendika.org reported that Kaplanoğlu was taken into custody on charges of spreading propaganda for a terrorist organization. His lawyers have said they don’t have access to the full content of the accusations as there is a confidentaility order on the case. The journalist was arrested by a Bursa court on May 5 on the same charge.
DİHA journalist kept in isolation
Nedim Türfent, a reporter for the shuttered Dicle News Agency (DİHA) — later reopened as Dihaber– who has been imprisoned since May 13, 2016 on terror-related charges, said he had been kept in solitary confinement or five days according to report on April 30. Türfent was moved to the cell on April 26.
Türfent, who is being kept in Van Prison, will appear before a judge on June 14 at the Hakkari High Criminal Court.
DİHA journalist handed down prison sentence
DİHA reporter Mehmet Güleş, who has been imprisoned since December 2016 on terror related charges, was sentenced to 9 years four months and 15 days in prision on May 3, World Press Freedom Day. The journalist was taken into custody on Dec. 7, 2016 while reporting the news at the Elazığ Courthouse.
Güleş was sentenced for “membership in a terrorist organization,” and “propaganda on behalf of a terrorist organizaton.”
Cumhuriyet board elections canceled by court order
On May 2, an Istanbul court ruled to cancel the executive board elections held by the Cumhuriyet Foundation, which owns the Cumhuriyet newspaper, three years ago.
The court canceled the election results on the grounds of “procedural violations in board member assignments.”
The court case was brought by former Cumhuriyet board members Alev Coşkun, Şevket Tokuş, Mustafa Pamukoğlu and Republican People’s Party (CHP) deputy Mustafa Balbay.
If the decision is upheld during the appeals process, the board elections will be held again in a meeting of the former board members including Balbay.
Currently, ten members of the newspaper’s board, including its columnists and a cartoonist, are in prison. They were arrested in November 2016. Ahmet Şık, a reporter for Cumhuriyet, has also been in prison since December 2016.
