European Press Prize

“The aim is simple: to salute and encourage journalism of the highest quality wherever it can be found in our continent. If journalism matters, then excellence matters”  So runs the rubric for Europe’s most prestigious journalism awards – the European Prize.  The selection committee is still inviting entries until 31 December.

There are four categories in which individuals can nominate themselves or nominate others. These are: investigative journalism (what it says on the label), the distinguished writing award which is a celebration of the journalist craft, the commentator award for “opinion pungently expressed” and the innovation award opens a door onto the future of journalism.

There is a fifth prize – the special award for which no nominations are sought but which is the gift of the jury. Last year’s winner was P24’s Yavuz Baydar for his work as an ombudsman trying to rescue his newspaper Sabah slide into infamy. It was according to the citation “a symbol of support for his fight for free press.” Baydar shared the prize with Der Spiegel and The Guardian for publishing the NSA stories.

The prize is the work of 7 foundations all with media connections based in the UK, the Neatherlands, Denmark and the Czech Republic, to promote journalistic excellence.

“Stirring public debate, illuminating complex issues for readers through investigative journalism and holding the institutions of power to account have always been at the core of quality journalism. They must be the cornerstones of a future society and a dynamic democracy,” the award rubric reads.
