An Istanbul court on April 14 jailed three more students from Istanbul’s Boğaziçi University who staged a protest against another group of Boğaziçi students distributing Turkish delights on campus on March 19 in support of Turkey’s military operation on Syria’s Afrin.

Four students who were in custody as of April 13 were referred to the prosecutor late Friday night. The court jailed three of the students pending trial while one student was released on judicial control terms.

The latest development brought the total number of Boğaziçi students jailed pending trial for taking part in the protest to 12.

At least 16 of the protesting students were taken into custody during police raids on their homes and dorm rooms after President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called the students “communists and traitors” and branded them “terrorist youth” during a public speech. Nine of those students were jailed pending trial on April 3 on the charge of “spreading terrorist propaganda” while six students were released on judicial control terms.
