Kıraathane Istanbul Literature House is no stranger to censorship and self-censorship, but not in the ways you might anticipate. Its newest exhibition uncovers the restrictions on artistic freedom and expression, from the confines of prisons to the broader social context. Titled “Sus-ma: Censorship and Self-Censorship Inside-Outside,” the exhibition is a collaborative effort between the Görülmüştür Collective, Redfotoğraf Group, and P24’s Susma (Speak Up) Platform.
This gripping exhibition delves deeply into the multifaceted nature of censorship, presenting a thorough exploration of its impacts both on political prisoners “inside” and on broader societal issues of free expression “outside.” Running through December 6, 2024, this exhibition features an extensive array of artistic works that illuminate the theme of censorship. Visitors will encounter poignant pieces created by prisoner artists, each reflecting their unique experiences and perspectives. Additionally, the exhibition showcases striking photographs that visually capture the nuances of censorship and its effects on society.

Curator Adil Okay speaks during the exhibition’s opening event.
