Be sure to mark your calendars and explore the detailed program available on Kıraathane’s website, www.kiraathane.com.tr, to make the most of this extraordinary literary celebration.
The Kıraathane’s Book Festival is a distinctive event that made its debut in 2019, with the ambitious goal of connecting passionate readers with independent publishers who, despite their limited resources, produce a remarkable array of high-quality books. This vibrant festival is a celebration of literary diversity, featuring an eclectic mix of publishers. Among them are generalist publishers that collaborate with celebrated authors such as Siren, alongside those dedicated to promoting minority languages and voices.
Notably, publishers like Aras and Istos focus on the rich literary traditions of the Armenian and Greek communities, while Lîs and Peywend are committed to elevating Kurdish literature. The festival also spotlights the feminist press Otonom, known for its innovative perspectives, alongside art book publishers Espas Sanat Kuram and Alef, who delve into the intersection of art, criticism, and literature. Theatre enthusiasts will find a treasure trove of works from the theatre book publisher Habitus, while those fascinated by critical thought can explore the offerings from Sanat Kritik. Graphic novel fans are not left out, with publishers like Lemis and Nada showcasing a variety of illustrated narratives.
Overall, the Kıraathane’s Book Festival stands out as a hub of creativity and cultural exchange, inviting attendees to immerse themselves in the richness of independent publishing and the stories it has to offer.
The Book Festival has revived the joyous celebration of literature right in Istanbul’s heart as an attempt to move away from the Tüyap venue where the International Istanbul Book Fair is held on the city’s outskirts. After the disruption caused by the pandemic in 2020, Kıraathane innovatively adapted the festival to the digital realm using the Miro app and organized live events on Zoom and YouTube. The festival has since returned in full swing, attracting hundreds of enthusiastic Istanbulites eager to reconnect with the enduring magic that books bring to our lives.
The publishers’ stands are open for visits at the Istanbul Literature House in Asmalı Mescit, Beyoğlu, from 1 PM to 8 PM on weekdays and from 11 AM to 8 PM on weekends until Sunday, October 27.
