The Guide to Using Non-Discriminatory Language in Journalism aims to raise awareness and hone journalists’ sensitivity to all forms of discrimination, whether based on ethnicity, gender, sexual identity or orientation, or religion. By doing so, the guide intends to steer journalists away from using discriminative language, including hate speech. It provides bias-free language guidelines that journalists can quickly consult even during busy working periods.

The Guide to Using Non-Discriminatory Language in Journalism was prompted by the need to demonstrate that the discriminatory language we constantly see in media not only hurts people’s feelings but also instigates social polarization and animosity. It includes lists of stereotypical expressions and words, recommendations on using non-discriminative language, and practical tips.

Each section contains examples of articles from national and local news outlets. These analyses signal problematic uses and expressions, showing how the articles can be revised and rewritten.
